How To Decide Whether Or Not To Take Maternity Photos

An artistic black and white maternity portrait at home in Denver.

Right now I am offering a complimentary maternity mini session when you book your newborn session.

It is a quick, relaxed portrait session at my studio, designed to capture this moment before your baby arrives. No complicated planning. No pressure. Just a few beautiful images of this fleeting chapter in your life.

If you have been wondering whether maternity photos are worth it, this is an easy way to experience them.

You’re Pregnant!

When you find out you’re pregnant, your mind starts racing with to do lists, things to research and make decisions on. What doctor should you use, what stroller should we buy, this weekend we need to put up the crib… Every decision seems so important. I remember researching strollers for hours (Ubbababy FTW)! The one thing that women have a hard time making a decision on is whether or not to do maternity portraits.

Some women know right away that it is a for sure, must-do thing, while others come around to it as their pregnancy develops. A few women are a NO WAY! I get that. With my first, I thought – “why? I’m not this way for long.” And that’s exactly the point.

It’s a fleeting time.

Reasons You Might Say No To Maternity Photos

For some women, maternity photos aren’t even on the table for discussion. It’s just a solid no, for a variety of reasons.

It’s a hassle. Honestly, everything feels like a hassle once you can’t see your toes 🙂

You feel like a beached whale. Your partner has to push you out of bed, you feel winded walking down the block and your energy in general is waning.

You may want to invest more into newborn photos or capturing multiple sessions during baby’s first year.

All of these are valid thoughts and reasons! Often, I have pregnant moms call about newborn photos and then we hash out whether or not adding on a maternity session is a good choice for them.

Reasons To Say Yes To Maternity Photos

If you’re on the fence, then you’ll likely regret not doing them. That bump doesn’t last forever, and neither do those tiny kicks. Pregnancy may feel like it lasts an eternity but in the grand scheme of life, it’s a blip.

Your child will love seeing you pregnant with them. They want to see what they looked like in your belly! My own kids have asked, and I had to go dig up some less than ideal iPhone photos.

This may be your last pregnancy. Sometimes this is by choice, and sometimes this is due to delivery complications or health issues.

It strengthens the bond – between you and baby, you and your children and with your partner.

Honestly, I adore these studio maternity sessions. They feel intimate and artistic. Women come in, uncertain if they should have done this. Once they see the images, they feel so solid in their decision of doing them.

Options for Maternity Photo Sessions in Denver

I have three kids, and it wasn’t until the third that I actually had photos done while pregnant. I always had newborn portraits planned and scheduled. For some reason, I didn’t think maternity portraits were important.

Guess what, I regret it. I so wish I had a few images of my pregnant belly to put into their newborn photo albums.

And this is the whole reason I now offer Simple Maternity Sessions in my studio. They are 15 minutes long and you can walk away with a handful of beautiful images. I approach these in an artistic way, using light and shadows, texture and movement to capture this special stage.

If you’d rather do something at home or outside (or just do a longer session in studio), then we can do a full maternity session in or around Denver for you. This includes professional hair and makeup, the option to change outfits and use some beautiful golden light.

Your home is a great spot, or I have several outdoor locations around Denver I love photographing at.

Your family is welcome to join in with any of the maternity session types. There is nothing so tender like a little child’s hand on your belly. I also have clothing for you to wear – robes, cardigans and bump-friendly dresses.

One last thing that I’ll say – I often hear that people regret not taking maternity photos. I’ve never heard anyone say that they regret taking them.
